MS/HS PE Teacher Bonnie Lam joined ASL this school year from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. However, she said she is truly from Canada.
鈥淗ome is Toronto for me,鈥 she said. 鈥淚’d love to be there in a split second if I could.鈥澛
Having moved to London right before school began, Lam said she hasn鈥檛 had time to fully explore the city so far. However, in the month she鈥檚 lived in London, Lam said she has enjoyed attending live theater performances.
Lam said she spends her free time playing team sports, such as volleyball, attending live performances, exploring different food cuisines, and traveling 鈥 all different ways she finds to learn outside of the classroom.
鈥淚 just love learning and I think there’s so much to offer in every place that I go,鈥 she said.
Lam said she grew up playing sports and appreciated physical activities for both the physical and mental benefits they provided.
鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 just about teaching me how to keep my body healthy, it was also learning about discipline, learning about teamwork, learning how to work individually, to persist, and to become resilient through obstacles,鈥 Lam said. 鈥淭hat’s transferable to a lot of life situations.鈥澛
As for words she lives by, Lam said she often finds herself saying, 鈥渕ake it happen鈥 when working towards a goal.
鈥淚t鈥檚 really just becoming solution-focused,鈥 she said. 鈥淛ust go out there, participate, make things happen the way that they need to be.鈥
In addition, Lam said she often tells her students, 鈥渄o your best and forget the rest鈥 as a reminder to prioritize their journey and growth, rather than focusing on an end result.
This school year, Lam hopes to build on pre-existing programs in order to continue to move the PE department forward. Outside of her department, she said her main goal is to learn about the school and its students.
鈥淚’m really excited to be here and I’m really looking forward to learning more about the community here,鈥 she said.
