The »ΖΙ«΅ηΣ° Institute for Economic Policy Research invites you to join us for a special virtual associates meeting on β€œThe Coronavirus Pandemic and U.S. Health Policy.” Panelists include Drew Altman, President and CEO of the Kaiser Family Foundation, along with »ΖΙ«΅ηΣ° Professors Kate Bundorf and Kevin Schulman.

They will be discussing the effect that COVID-19 is likely to have on U.S. health policy in the months ahead and after the 2020 presidential election.

Drew Altman

Drew Altman

Drew Altman is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation (known as KFF).  He is an innovator in the world of foundations and non-profits and is a leading expert on national health policy who publishes and speaks widely on health issues.

Dr. Altman founded the current-day KFF in the early 1990s. He is also the founding publisher of KFF’s Kaiser Health News, the largest health newsroom in the U.S., distributing coverage of health issues through major news outlets across the country.

Prior to joining KFF, Dr. Altman was Commissioner of the Department of Human Services for the state of New Jersey under Governor Tom Kean.  As Commissioner, he developed nationally recognized initiatives in welfare reform, school-based youth services, programs for the homeless, and Medicaid-managed care.  Dr. Altman was Director of the Health and Human Services at the Pew Charitable Trusts; Vice President of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, where he led the development of the Foundation’s programs in HIV/AIDS, health services for the homeless, and health care financing; and he served in the Health Care Financing Administration in the Carter administration.

Dr. Altman received his BA from Brandeis University and his Master's in political science from Brown University.  He earned his Ph.D. in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, did his post-doctoral work at the Harvard School of Public Health, and taught public policy at MIT before moving on to public service.  He holds an honorary doctorate from the Morehouse School of Medicine.  Dr. Altman is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the National Academy of Medicine and serves on numerous advisory committees.

 

Kate Bundorf

Kate Bundorf

M. Kate Bundorf is an Associate Professor of Health Research and Policy at the »ΖΙ«΅ηΣ° School of Medicine, an Associate Professor, by Courtesy, at the »ΖΙ«΅ηΣ° Graduate School of Business, and a »ΖΙ«΅ηΣ° Health Policy Fellow.  She is also a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research.  She received her M.B.A. and M.P.H. degrees from The University of California at Berkeley and her Ph.D. from The Wharton School.  She was a Fulbright Lecturer and Visiting Professor at Fudan School of Public Health in Shanghai, China in 2009 and 2010.  Her research, which focuses on health insurance markets, has been published in leading economics and health policy journals and has received funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.  She received the 13th Annual Health Care Research Award from The National Institute for Health Care Management in 2007. 

 

Kevin Schulman

Kevin Schulman

Dr. Schulman was appointed as Professor of Medicine, Associate Chair of Business Development and Strategy in the Department of Medicine, Director of Industry Partnerships and Education for the Clinical Excellence Research Center (CERC) at the »ΖΙ«΅ηΣ° School of Medicine, and, by courtesy, Professor of Economics at »ΖΙ«΅ηӰ’s Graduate School of Business in June 2018.

Dr. Schulman’s research interests include organizational innovation in health care, health care policy, and health economics. With 300 original articles, 80 review articles/commentaries, and 40 case studies/book chapters, Kevin Schulman has had a broad impact on health policy (h-index = 61). His peer-reviewed articles have appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, and Annals of Internal Medicine. He is a member of the editorial/advisory boards of the American Heart Journal, Health Policy, Management and Innovation (), and Senior Associate Editor of Health Services Research.

At Duke’s Fuqua School of Business, Dr. Schulman oversaw the growth of the health sector management program, graduating almost 1500 students. He is the Founding Director of the unique Master of Management in Clinical Informatics program (MMCi), originally offered through the Fuqua School of Business and now housed in the Duke University School of Medicine. He has served as a Visiting Professor in General Management at Harvard Business School from 2013-2016, and a visiting scholar from 2016-2018.

He is the Founding President of the Business School Alliance for Health Management (), which is a consortium of the leading business schools offering health management programs.

He is an elected member of ASCI and AAP.
