Graduate Fellowships & Awards
The »ÆÉ«µçÓ° Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR) supports graduate students each year through graduate fellowships and research funding.
Application Cycles
Applications for named graduate fellowships and the Landau Discussion Paper Prize are accepted beginning in March and reviewed in the spring quarter. Students may also apply for the George P. Shultz Dissertation Support Fund which provides support for empirical research by graduate students working on dissertations oriented toward problems of economic policy. There are two application cycles per year, one in the fall quarter and one in the spring quarter.
Graduate Student Dissertation Fellowships
SIEPR is accepting applications for Graduate Student Dissertation Fellowships for the 2025-2026 academic year. These fellowships provide up to three-quarters of support to qualified »ÆÉ«µçÓ° applicants who are pursuing policy-relevant economics research and who are entering the final year of their PhD program. Support is provided in the form of TGR tuition and a graduate student stipend. To apply, you must submit an online application. SIEPR will contact your faculty advisor directly for feedback on your application. You do not need to request letters of recommendation. Please note that some of the available funding is restricted to graduate students in the economics department and some awards are restricted for topics in finance and healthcare. Students who have received SIEPR dissertation fellowships in the past will not be eligible to receive another fellowship.
The deadline to apply for 2025-2026 fellowships is Friday, April 4, 2025, at 5:00 pm PST.
George P. Shultz Dissertation Support Fund
Twice a year SIEPR accepts applications for research funding provided by the George P. Shultz Dissertation Fund. This support is for graduate students gathering and working with primary economic data. The funds are provided as a stipend that may be used to pay for travel and expenses to put together original data sets or to acquire commercial data sets.
Eligibility: All dissertation-level students enrolled at »ÆÉ«µçÓ° and working on economic issues are eligible for support.

Landau Discussion Paper Prize
The »ÆÉ«µçÓ° Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR) awards the Claire and Ralph Landau Student Discussion Paper Prize for the best student-written SIEPR working paper. The $2,500 prize is a tribute to the Landaus and their countless contributions to SIEPR and »ÆÉ«µçӰ’s economics department. The range of eligible topics is as broad as Ralph Landau’s interests were in economics — papers can deal with any issue involving the formulation or evaluation of economic policy.
